The Vanderbilt Republic proudly presents the third showing of Phenomenon
at Gowanus Loft — Offering, a new series of sandpaper and canvas sculptures by Sarah E. Brook.
Working with powerful memories of the desert landscape in which I was raised,
my practice explores the psychological impact of vast and remote spaces on the development of identity.
I choose materials for their inherent evocation of the high desert and manipulate them minimally;
their intrinsic properties drive the creative process.
First with sandpaper sculptures on stretched canvas,
and then with the canvases themselves leaving the wall and existing in space—
I continue to move in the direction of creating a physical place, or landscape.
Ultimately, my work explores the particular power of landscape
to provide the necessary literal and psychological space to fully encounter all aspects of oneself.
