εὖτόπος (“Eutopia”) ↬ 11 June-11 September 2016

The Vanderbilt Republic very proudly presents the first group show by the artists of the Phenomenon at Snug Harbor’s historic Cultural Centerεὖτόπος (“Eutopia”), a site-responsive/immersive installation across multiple landmarked structures, with curation × lighting design by George Del Barrio:

The term “utopia” was coined in Greek by Sir Thomas More in 1516.

The word comes from the Greek: οὐ (“not”) and τόπος (“place”), meaning “no-place”, and strictly describes any non-existent society ‘described in considerable detail’.

However, in standard usage, the word’s meaning has narrowed and now usually describes an unattainable social structure that is intended to be seen as considerably better than our contemporary society.

“Eutopia” - derived from the Greek εὖ (“good” or “well”) and τόπος (“place”), means “good place”, and is strictly speaking the correct term to describe a positive, plausible utopia.
