Shan Jayakumar is an artist based in New York City whose work encompasses design, text, historical research and documentary photography. Shan studied at Columbia and Cambridge Universities, where his thesis investigated urban development in India. Shan’s projects span the design of structures to the imagery of streetscapes. His current research includes finding community-based solutions to urban design issues. He enjoys teaching and writing on the interwoven topics of architecture and photography, politics and applied art history.

Shan’s photography has appeared in international publications such as Newsweek, National Geographic online, the Economic Times, Veja, and Dia Siete, and has been distributed by the Associated Press and the Gamma photo agency. A frequent guest speaker at The New School, Shan’s work has been included in a variety of book anthologies. His design on the theme of conceptual urbanism can currently be seen in The Greatest Grid exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York, marking the 200th anniversary of the Manhattan street grid.

Shan is working on a series about places and their meanings for VR magazine.
